Dulce Ramirez is our Outreach and Education Coordinator. Please contact Dulce by email at dulce@elfuturo-nc.org to help us connect with you and your community! Mental illness and substance abuse are highly stigmatized in many traditional cultures. We confront stigma through community education to help normalize illness so individuals don’t feel shame in admitting to illness. Frequently, individuals understand their struggle in light of immigration stress. We help them become more aware of a holistic context where emotional health is contextualized as important part of physical and spiritual well-being. We also meet community members through interactive outreach quizzes at weekend Latino events, and have therapists in secondary schools and federally funded primary health care centers in order to connect with them where they already feel a level of comfort and trust. We work closely with referring agencies, and provide clinical supervision to staff at a local Hispanic Center; a health department social worker; and a Child Protective Services worker. As a result, we are setting a higher community standard for interdisciplinary care that is culturally and clinically competent. Public outreach is conducted in locations such as health fairs, busy flea markets, and Latino community fairs. We also hold Spanish-language discussions on local radio stations about depression and substance abuse. Upcoming Events and Outreach
