"I just wanted to thank all of you for making my year at El Futuro a great one.  Not only did I learn a lot from being there social work-wise, but I could not have asked for a better group of people with whom to work. Each of you is extremely talented, areing, and good at what you do.  Thanks for "showing me the ropes" and making my field placement a really positive experience!!!"

Anne Watson is a 2nd year graduate student from UNC School of Social Work whose focus is both clinical practice and community organizing. Ann was born and raised in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Ann is excited to be working at El Futuro as an intern this year. She received her bachelor's degree in Spanish from Guilford College. Her past experience includes perinatal home visitation, second language instruction in the U.S. and abroad, and serving refugee populations here in North Carolina. She has lived in Mexico and Costa Rica. In her free time she enjoys traveling, being outdoors, and spending time with her family.

Anne-Marie Olarte is a first year graduate student at the UNC School of Social Work. A native of Miami, FL, she grew up passionate about Hispanic culture and its rich language, encouraged by her Colombian father. She spent a month in Costa Rica volunteering at Hogarcito, an orphanage in San Carlos. Anne-Marie graduated from Vanderbilt University with a bachelors degree in Honors Psychology and Spanish Literature and plans to work as a direct practitioner after receiving her Master's Degree. She is working with Karla Siu and is really excited to work at El Futuro addressing the needs of the Latino community in North Carolina. In her spare time, she loves to read, hike, listen to music, watch movies and spend time with her family.

Sarah Campbell is a first year graduate student in a dual-degree program seeking a Masters of Social Work from UNC-Chapel Hill and  a Masters of Divinity from Duke University.  Originally from Florida, Sarah graduated from Stetson University where she majored in Humanities and minored in Spanish and Psychology.  During college, she studied Spanish  in Spain and spent a summer volunteering in rural Venezuela.  Sarah has also enjoyed traveling in Costa Rica and Peru.  In the future, Sarah plans to work in non-profit program management to empower teens through service learning and cross-cultural experiences.  In the very little free time that grad school affords, Sarah can be found doing yoga, cooking, and enjoying nature.

Christina Kim, RN is a first year psychiatric nurse practitioner student from UNC School of Nursing in Chapel Hill. Originally from Arizona, she graduated from the University of Arizona in Tucson with a bachelor’s in biology. After moving to NC she decided to go back to school for her bachelor's degree in nursing. After graduation and a short stint in Boston, she and her husband are back and enjoying all that NC has to offer. She likes to run, cook, read, and hang out with the youth at her church. In the future, she’d like to work internationally with children and adolescents post trauma.

Discrimination, Latinos, and Mental Health:
Psychological Homelessness

  • Monday, October 26th at 6- 7PM- at the Carrboro Office or
  • Wednesday, October 28th at 1 -2 PM- at the Durham Office

Hi.

Now it is finally going to happen! As part of our training program here at El Futuro we want to start a monthly discussion group, where we can talk about different topics as they relate to our Latino clients.

I will be leading the first one and we will be talking about Discrimination, Latinos, and Mental Health. This discussion group will take place on both:

Monday, October 26th at 6- 7PM- at the Carrboro Office
Wednesday, October 28th at 1 -2 PM- at the Durham Office

I don't think there will be any reading for this discussion group, but I will give a short presentation and then open it up for discussion. One of the things I will introduce you to is the idea of "Psychological Homelessness" in our clients.

This is a very exciting opportunity to discuss important issues in an inter-disciplinary fashion - so I hope you can be there.

Birgitte Espitia, Ph.D, Therapist and Clinical Director

Birgitte Espitia is Danish, but lived in Colombia for three years.  Dr. Espitia works as a therapist half-time at the Carrboro Community Health Center and half-time at the Siler City Community Health Center, with funding from the state Office of Rural Health.  Her past work includes serving refugee immigrants, child prostitutes, and young children.  Her training is in Marriage and Family Therapy, and she enjoys taking a family-centered approach to mental health treatment.  Dr. Espitia’s Colombian-American husband teaches at UNC, and she has two daughters.

"I can't tell you how invaluable your guidance has been lately.   I'm currently in an Ob-Gyn clinic every Wednesday and more than half of my patients speak Spanish only.  I have a hard time expressing succinctly how much the entire staff at El Futuro has helped me learn how to approach patients in a respectful and helpful way.  You guys literally made me a better psychiatrist...and I was happy to be along for the ride."
Marcus Wellen, MD - psychiatry resident
